The writing that appears on the sidewall of your tyres serves two main purposes;
Firstly, it is to help identify the size and specification of the tyres. The second is to confirm that the tyre has been tested and approved to European and other country safety standards. The letter “E” denotes that a tyre meets European legislation.
Although not illegal, it is not recommended to have tyres with a lower speed rating or load capacity than the manufacturer recommended tyre specification for your vehicle, or to have a combination of different tyre construction types. Your vehicle handbook will confirm your vehicle’s tyre speed and load ratings as well as any additional requirements.
Load Index and Speed Ratings
Typically listed next to the size of a tyre, are markings relating to the maximum load and speed capabilities of each tyre.
For example: 94W
94= Indicates the maximum load carrying capacity per tyre, in this case 94 equates to 670kg.
W= indicates the maximum speed capabilities of a tyre. In this case W equates to 270km/h (approximately 168mph)
